Well come to Kyparissia
Thursday, 17 July 2008
Kyparissia is a town (6000 pop) in Southwestern Peloponnese (Messinia). Is the rustic and trading center of Trifilia`s area and it is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Above the traditional settlement of old town of Arkadia, there is a medieval castle that was erected by the Byzantines, renewed by Franks and extendxed by the Turns and the Venitians around which spreads the old town . The ochre-hued mansions stand abandoned, having suffered heavy damage during the civil war, though a couple of tavernas still function here, lovely old places and very welcoming.
Below the hill, the modern town goes about its business, with a small harbour and real shops. A few tourist boutiques and a nightclub or two have sprung up recently, but it's still a pleasant place to rest up, and possibly preferable to a night in Kalamáta if you're on your way to Olympia(50km) by bus or train (Kyparissía is the junction of the Kalamáta(62km) Pylos(60km) and Pyrgos(60km) lines). Within walking distance of town are long, near-deserted sands - turtle breeding-grounds - and rocky cliff paths
